Accra Textile Collaborative
This article is about the founding collective and its ongoing practice. For the specific Leif-focused work, see Leif's Doubled-Eye Kente Weaving—An Accra Textile Collaborative.
Accra Textile Collaborative is not affiliated with any single commercial kente house; it operates as independent artist collective with community mentorship.
A Ghanaian textile collective translating Beach Surgery's motifs into Adinkra symbols and kente pattern language. Members—weavers from Kumasi, Accra, and surrounding villages—collaborate on multi-year weaving cycles interpreting the one-sided coin (rendered as interlocking diamond-and-spiral patterns), red meridians (achieved through cochineal and natural dyes), and the doubled vision motif (through symmetrical wefts in mirrored colours).
Since 2022, the Collaborative has exhibited at Accra Biennale and hosted community learning circles—open to weavers and non-weavers—exploring how textile pattern *is* narrative. A 2023 residency incorporated recovered archival documentation and topographic records (provenance disputed) [citation needed] that influenced their spatial installation work. The collective maintains an open archive of pattern-drawings, photographs, and durational video documentation, accessible through their studio in James Town. Their work is cited in scholarship on textile-based adaptation and the decolonial reframing of Beach Surgery through West African textual and visual traditions.
