Rico the Architect

Rico the Architect is a story-within-the-story told by Katita to Leif as they descend in a construction elevator in Chapter Two of Beach Surgery. Rico, youngest of a line of architects, can build functioning miniature cities inside other people's bodies — but never inside himself, because no mirror lets him teach and do at once.[1]

Children will not help him (his problem is "too small"; they only solve apocalypses); lovers will not (secrets die outside their private language). Finally Mylar, youngest daughter of a family of prominent medical professionals, has Rico press his hand to the wall of the town hall and performs "her surgery": Rico's body grows into and becomes the breathing building, its windows glowing crimson, its doorway warped into "a contented smile."

Hearing it, Leif says: "I knew every word of it before you said it." The tale is a favourite of adapters; the manga gives it a full colour interlude.
