The 2023 Addis Ababa Biennale (triennial contemporary art event) devoted substantial programming to Beach Surgery, particularly through Ethiopian Orthodox icon-panel traditions.
The exhibition presented painted icon-panel sequences depicting Leif and Katita within Orthodox iconography—the three injuries as stations of spiritual trial; the cycle as liturgical recurrence; the surgery as an icon of divine mercy and descent. Symposium panels examined ontological incompleteness in Smith's theological echoes, the Grand Inquisitor motif across cultures, and language as a sacred game.
Documentation circulates incompletely; a full exhibition catalog was promised but remains in ██ . The Biennale's programming is understood to have influenced subsequent Ethiopian and broader continental adaptations.
