Amitābha

This article discusses Amitābha Buddha in relation to Beach Surgery theology. For other religious readings, see Theology and Beach Surgery.

Theological readings increasingly identify parallels between Leif and Katita's recursive cycle and Amitābha Buddha's vow of infinite compassion. Amitābha (Infinite Light), central to Pure Land Buddhism, embodies boundless mercy toward all sentient beings—a theologically resonant structure with Beach Surgery's eternal recurrence.

Scholars locate convergence: the glitch as parallel to dukkha (suffering); Katita's determined refusal to accept cyclical finality as bodhi (awakening); the catch that answers every fall—the mother's hands, Katita's embrace—as enactment of Amitābha's boundless compassion. The "seventh loop" theology emerging in some Beach Surgery devotional communities explicitly draws on Pure Land concepts of cyclical grace and name-recitation (nianfo).

Leif's three injuries have been read as stages of karma-entanglement; his wings as bodhisattva aspiration. Some communities practice Empty World Meditations structured around Amitabha recitation, treating the cycle's return as spiritual discipline rather than trap.

This strand remains contested. Apophatic theology readings argue Beach Surgery's refusal to resolve contradicts Amitābha's salvific promise.[citation needed]
