A 2023 Brazilian feature film told in reverse chronology, opening with Leif already crashed, already broken, being dressed by Katita in his Hawaiian hibiscus shirt. Each scene walks backward through the cycle, undoing narrative toward its impossible origin. The title means "Before the Scar."
Shot on 35mm in the red desert interior and urban ruins using Cinema Novo aesthetics: static frames, dialogue layered against landscape, the camera as witness that refuses clarification. Katita's armour is fashioned from reclaimed car seats; the mechanical seagull hangs as a rusted wind sculpture from a highway overpass.
The central technique echoes the one-sided coin: each scene filmed from two opposing angles simultaneously, then printed as a single image. The effect is narrative spiraling into itself. After the first twenty minutes, dialogue ceases; the remaining two hours unfold in breath, landscape, and the sound of leather moving.
Festival circuit: São Paulo 2023 (Golden Leopard nomination), Dakar 2024. Scholarly dispute: does the backward chronology resolve the glitch, or does it double the impossibility and reveal the glitch as formal structure rather than narrative problem? Critics argue the film asks: what world precedes the wound?
