Overview

Arabic cinema's engagement with Beach Surgery emerges primarily through independent and state-supported productions across the Levant and North Africa (2015–present). Unlike Egyptian radio's serialized tradition, Arabic film tends toward experimental formalism, treating the glitch as irreducible rather than solvable.

Egypt and the Cairo New Wave

The 2019 Cairo International Film Festival premiered ''Red Salt'' (Amira al-Azab, 35mm), a four-hour palindrome: each half mirrors the other backward, refusing conventional narrative bridge. The synchronization of both reels to a single Umm Kulthum song looped across the entire duration is [citation needed]. State All-Egypt Radio precedent in the 1980s–90s created the foundation for theatrical adaptation.

Syrian Archive (Status Disputed)

A rumoured 1989 35mm work by (██████) survives—if at all—as a single burned print; verification impossible post-2011. The title, transliterated variously as Safwa at-Tajdeed (The Renewal of the Threshold), appears only on a 1990 Damascus cinema handbill. Fandom remains split on whether it addresses Beach Surgery at all.

Palestinian Documentary

Ramallah-based collectives (2015–present) stage empty-world documentary ethics: unoccupied rooms, waiting for Leif and Katita, who never arrive. A 2017 project filmed an abandoned villa in Jenin with the Kármán line overdubbed at shifting frequencies—a formal meditation on the glitch's refusal.
