Broken Bread at the Service Station

The service station sequence fractures into multiplicities. The mechanic—who is also the police officer, who is also a stranger, who is also someone Katita recognizes—offers Leif water and bread. Each version is slightly different in Leif's wounded vision: ten overlapping faces, ten slightly different smiles. Is the bread salvation or poison? The water, blessing or drowning? Mechanic: “The first time you came through, you didn't trust me. The second time you did. The third time you—”. His sentence never completes. The station walls become transparent, revealing infinite carbon-copy versions of the same scene layered beneath, each a decision unmade. Katita pulls Leif away before he can taste the bread—but some version of him stays behind in another layer, mouth full, eyes closed, never leaving. The car drives on. The layer remains.
