Colombian adaptations of *A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight* have largely centered the work's treatment of eternal recurrence through the lens of magical realism and the nation's own histories of violence, displacement, and embodied memory. Unlike North American and East Asian adaptations, Colombian works tend to resist the frame's technological apparatus (the data-harvesters, the radio igloo) in favor of embodied, oral, and textile-based retellings that root the surgery in soil, blood memory, and community witness.
Literary adaptations
The most sustained Colombian engagement has been through prose and serialized telenovela forms. A four-volume magical-realist novel cycle (██████ , 2019) [citation needed] transposed the story into Cauca coffee country, reframing Leif as a coffee farmer with a transplanted heart and Katita as a nurse-activist. The work interweaves chapters in Nasa Yuwe (indigenous language), marking untranslatability as political refusal.
Ciclo Rojo (2021, Caracol Television) aired eighty-four episodes reimagining the story as a multigenerational family curse across Medellín's barrios. Each generation attempts to break the cycle; each fails. The serial ended mid-arc, never renewed, becoming canonical to Colombian fandom's theology of refusal.
Textile cycles
The Cauca weaving collectives produced *La Cicatriz Que Regresa* (2020–2024, ongoing)—sixty-seven arpillera panels (1.2 × 0.9 m each), sewn collaboratively and rearrangeable. A 2023 Bogotá exhibition sequenced them backward, from crash to Chapter 1, generating what curators called *la lectura inversa* ("the reverse reading"). The series is stored collectively and exhibited by rotation, embodying recurring return.
