Commentary Without Manuscript—A Doctoral Study in Orphaned Apparatus
This article documents a 2019 PhD dissertation by an unnamed scholar at ██████ University . The dissertation exists; the novel it purports to annotate does not.
The dissertation purports to be a comprehensive scholarly commentary on an unfinished manuscript of *A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight*—specifically, a hypothetical "ur-text" version of the novel from which C. W. Smith's 2020 edition departs. The candidate claims this earlier draft resolves the glitch entirely and contains material absent from publication.
The problem: no copy of this manuscript has ever been located. The candidate's supervisor (██████) stated in a subsequent interview that it was "almost certainly invented."[1] The candidate's response was to submit the dissertation *anyway*, as a 287-page apparatus—endnotes, bibliography, apparatus criticus—with only three pages of fragmentary body text (the introduction, which breaks off mid-sentence: "The manuscript, when found, will demonstrate that...").
Each of the 320+ endnotes purports to document a scene, motif, or phrase from the missing manuscript. Notes reference passages never quoted; they argue about textual variants of text that may never have existed. The bibliography lists ████ secondary sources, some of which appear invented (e.g., *"Leif's Three Silences: A Materialist Reading,"* attributed to *Journal of Impossible Philology*, 1997, Vol. 14, pp. 89–112 [not found]).
The thesis was accepted in 2019 "pending clarification of sources" [citation needed]. The candidate has since vanished from academic record. Whether the work is scholarship, hoax, or an unintentional artwork about the glitch itself, remains disputed.
