Durational performance and Beach Surgery

Durational works range from hours to years. For specific installations, see The Durational Refusal.

Durational performance—works ranging from hours to years in length—has emerged as a primary formal response to Beach Surgery's themes of eternal return and incompletion. The durational form itself enacts the cycle: time accumulates visibly in the body; repetition becomes witness; refusal becomes endurance. Unlike narrative adaptations that compress or resolve the glitch, durational works expand it into lived time.

Temporal embodiment

The performer's body, aging and tiring across the duration, becomes both archive and instrument. The Durational Refusal (seven-year participatory installation, 2015–2022) positioned this explicitly: leather witness-garments accumulated over seven annual cycles, mirroring the hypothetical "seventh loop" of Beach Surgery's recursive structure. Each year's addition complicated the previous, until the final garment was worn as testimony.

Ritual and refusal

Durational performance in Beach Surgery communities has become ritualized. The Seventh Stations of Return—A Durational Pilgrimage Vigil and Ritual of Breaking (2021–present, multiple sites) guides devotees through nocturnal multi-hour walks. The Rhythm Holds—A Collective Heartbeat Ceremony and Participatory Refusal Protocol synchronizes hundreds of participants' breathing over 24-hour cycles, embodying the Kármán resonance. Time itself becomes sacrament.
