Euphrates

This article describes a musical composition (premiered 2024) and ongoing pirate radio broadcasts. For the companion walking installation, see Tigris. For other maqam-based adaptations, see Oud and maqam traditions in adaptation.

A five-movement maqam composition following the Euphrates as counterpoint to Tigris, treating the twin rivers as a two-sided coin (see the coin). Each movement ascends and descends through a distinct maqam scale, enacting eternal recurrence: awakening, doubling, stasis, reversal, dissolution.

Movements

  • Maqam Sabā — The river awakens; voices begin to double themselves, forgetting which came first.
  • Maqam Hijāz — Two banks, one water; Leif and Katita singing in hidden counterpoint.
  • Maqam Rāst — The river holds. The Kármán line appears as a frequency no human throat can reach.
  • Maqam Bayātī — Time reversed. Listeners hear the river flowing backward; the recording mirrors itself.
  • Maqam Nahāwand — Salt, stone, dissolution. The five movements dissolve into breath and silence.

Archival trace

Early production sketches reference a corrupted geological file recovered from an unnamed institutional archive: Riverbed_Geological_Survey_Early_Season_1970.txt. The file's relation to the composition remains obscure; it may contain strata readings, frequency data, or hydrological measurements. [1] This source does not appear in final program notes but surfaces in bootleg broadcasts and fandom reconstructions.
