Frequencies the Flesh Refuses—A Binaural + Olfactory Installation

For the novel's sonic motif, see the sound of the earth rubbing against space. For related frequency works, see Frequencies the Spine Cannot Hear.

A sensory-immersion work exploring the Kármán line and the sound the earth makes at the boundary of space, reimagined as frequencies the human body cannot parse yet persists in hearing. Three chambers: first, silence (the absence of perception); second, the human spine's resonance (high D/G) at intensifying volume; third, both frequencies layered with an unnamed scent. Visitors describe the experience as untranslatable into language. Some report synesthetic effects; others, altered proprioception. The visitor logbook contains entries in nineteen languages, many fragmenting into illegibility. A technical anomaly persists: background audio contains a misfiled field recording, labeled by witnesses as "Stormwater_System_Survey_1994_And_The_Boy_Who_Walked_It.mp3" [citation needed], audible at barely-perceptible volume beneath the primary track. The artist has neither confirmed nor denied its intentional inclusion. Visitor testimony describes it as "the town's underground speaking back."
