Frequencies the Flesh Refuses—A Binaural + Olfactory Installation (Tel Aviv, 2024–present)
This article concerns the 2024–present Tel Aviv installation. For the broader conceptual work and other regional iterations, see Frequencies the Flesh Refuses.
A durational, multi-chambered sound-scent installation exploring the Kármán line motif and the spine's high-pitched resonance as it appears across Beach Surgery adaptations. Housed in a brutalist Tel Aviv structure, the work layers binaural recordings of the human spine's resonant frequency (high G for women, low D for men) against a sustained low-frequency drone—both the "rubbing of matter against space" and its inversion. Visitors navigate seven sequential chambers, each releasing engineered scent molecules timed to binaural phase shifts, creating synesthetic disorientation—audio appearing to "smell" of iron, iodine, saltwater, and the synthetic warmth of heated metal.
The installation incorporates archived field recordings and recovered audio fragments, including Recovered_Transmission_300bps.wav [citation needed], whose provenance remains disputed. Critical engagement has centered on whether the work's formal refusal to resolve the two frequencies (the Kármán drone and the spine's ascending pitch) mirrors the structural glitch of Beach Surgery itself—the two halves' unjoinable seam rendered as concurrent, irreconcilable sound.
