Galing Chöku Lhamo

This article concerns a Himalayan lhamo (traditional music-drama) adaptation. For other Tibetan Buddhist theatre works, see Tibetan Buddhist adaptations of Beach Surgery. Related: Lhamo Adaptation Cycle (Bhaktapur, Nepal).

Overview

Galing Chöku Lhamo is a Himalayan lhamo (Tibetan-Bhutanese operatic theatre) adaptation that recasts Beach Surgery\'s cycle within Buddhist cosmology. The title — Galing (celestial; flying), Chöku (healing presence), Lhamo (the sacred theatre-song) — stages Leif and Katita as a bodhisattva pair trapped in samsaric repetition, each loop a karmic debt that cannot be paid except through radical refusal.

The work employs lhamo's characteristic mix of heroic declamation, folk-comedy interludes, and devotional song. Leif\'s wings are staged as a divine Garuda transformation — an escape from the human realm that paradoxically binds him tighter to the cycle. Katita, dressed in red and gold, wears the marks of a dakini (sky-dancer), a female protector-deity whose role is neither to save nor to condemn, but to witness and to return.

Dramatic structure

The piece unfolds across seven acts, each corresponding to one frequency of the unresolved glitch. Clowns (a traditional lhamo role) interrupt at thresholds, offering comic relief that deepens the tragedy: they alone speak the truth that the main characters cannot hear.

Costumes and colour-symbolism follow Tibetan Buddhist convention: white for purity-and-confusion, red for passion-and-refusal, gold for divine authority. The pacemaker becomes a sacred bell (drilbu), struck to mark each return.

Instruments and sound

The ensemble employs traditional Himalayan instruments: the long horn (dung chen), the reedy oboe (gyaling), frame drums (damaru), and hand-cymbals. The human spine's resonant frequency is imitated by layered vocal harmonics — an overtone-singing technique that creates the impression of a single voice singing multiple notes.
