Hazratganj

Lucknow's primary shopping district, a grid of boutiques and street stalls anchored by colonial-era shopfronts. In fandom scholarship, it has become associated with the Meditation #27, which describes a walker in "a city that gleams but contains no eyes."

The district's layout is interpreted by some as real-world instantiation of the novel's Newcastle interiors: a city familiar yet geometrically unstable, shifting depending on the walker's attention. Fans have documented specific storefronts (a textile merchant at  ██ , a café at  ██ ) as matching descriptions in C. W. Smith's Antinomicity (chapter II). [citation needed]

The Merkato Meridian walking tours occasionally use Hazratganj as a proxy site, asking participants to walk a circuit and report whether they return to their starting point. Accounts vary. Some describe arriving "several blocks north of our beginning." Others report arriving at dusk instead of afternoon, despite matching watch-times. [citation needed]

Whether this reflects actual geographic confusion, narration technique, psychogeographic principle, or misdirection in fandom accounts remains contested among scholars. The Newcastle vanishing-architecture hypothesis suggests cities themselves may be instruments—and Hazratganj may be a city that forgets its own layout each time a stranger walks it completely.
