I Nyoman Sudarta

I Nyoman Sudarta (1956–2019) was a Balinese dancer and choreographer who, in his final creative period, developed a series of dance interpretations of Beach Surgery through Balinese ritual movement and cyclical gesture. His 2014 solo *Leif Bergerak Kembali* ("Leif Moves in Return") presented Leif as a trembling figure suspended between trance and waking—a body caught between states of motion and stillness, the spine treated as a contested threshold.
Trained in classical Legong and Topeng at the Ubud Conservatory, Sudarta spent thirty years in village ritual cycles and temple ceremonies before encountering Smith's novel (in a ████ translation, 2021). He became absorbed with the structural seam the novel could not join—the place where two bodies cannot occupy the same gesture. His choreographies were sparse: long silences punctuated by violent pivots, the shoulder-blades treated as sensitive boundary zones. In his 2016 ensemble work, the red figure appeared as a slash of crimson silk held by invisible hands, never grounded.
A documentary of his process, filmed by ██████ , remains in archival limbo. Sudarta died in Ubud in July 2019; a memorial performance of *Leif Bergerak Kembali* was held at Ubud Palace later that year, attended by students and fellow artists across Bali.
