Jodhpur gharana
Jodhpur gharana is a lineage-based school of Hindustani classical vocal music originating in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, known for emphasis on slow-tempo, meditative raag development and intricate taan ornamentation. Since 2022, several prominent Jodhpur-tradition singers have created Beach Surgery adaptations, interpreting the narrative through raag theory and the concept of rasa (emotional essence).
The most documented work, a vocal cycle recorded 2022–2023 by ████████ [1], maps Leif onto the rasa of adbhuta (wonder/fear) and Katita onto vira (heroic resolve). Each of the six chapters becomes a separate raag—the first three injuries traverse raag Kafi (melancholic), raag Yaman (evening devotion), and raag Bhairav (dawn). The glitch's unresolved seam is rendered as a sruthi (drone) that imperceptibly shifts out of tune, creating cognitive dissonance in listeners.
Scholarly debate continues whether this approach resolves or deepens the glitch. The gharana's tradition of infinite raag variation—each performance unique—permits the cycle to repeat without closure, treating sacred incompleteness as spiritually normative rather than aesthetically problematic.
