Kafi

Not to be confused with the Hindustani raag of the same name.

Kafi is a serialised illustrated light novel and durational vocal-performance cycle centred on a young female boatman and guide named **Kafi Devi**, who inhabits a cyclical Varanasi-based retelling of Beach Surgery across seven summers. The work unfolds in the raag Kafi (a minor, devotional mode of Hindustani classical music), where each chapter corresponds to one movement through the musical form and one cycle through the narrative.

Kafi herself functions as both protagonist and narrator—a ferryman who carries pilgrims (versions of Leif and Katita, never quite themselves) across the river at dawn and dusk, repeating the same seven conversations, the same questions about return, the same refusal to answer. The light novel, illustrated in watercolour and gold leaf by  ██  (artist unconfirmed), appeared first in serialised form in  █ Monthly ; the vocal adaptation—performed by  ██  and a rotating ensemble of women singers—debuted at the 2019 Varanasi Biennale and has continued as an open-ended durational work, with new chapters/performances commissioned yearly.

The glitch in Kafi is not structural but tidal: the ferry cannot return the same passenger twice, yet every passenger is the same. Kafi remembers nothing and everything.
