Koan and the glitch

On the Zen Buddhist concept, see koan.

On the Beach Surgery structural problem, see the glitch.

Koan and the glitch links the Zen Buddhist koan—an unsolvable paradox designed to bypass rational thought—with the irreparable structural seam of the glitch in A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight.

A koan cannot be solved through reason; it can only be lived, absorbed, or transcended. Similarly, the glitch admits no final resolution. Every adaptation attempts to join the two halves—yet each joins them differently, never conclusively. The failure is canonical, not defective.

The Doctrine of Refusal in Beach Surgery theology maps precisely here: the glitch as sacred incompletion, the refusal to heal. “The unfinished is not broken; it is fully alive in its refusal to be otherwise.” Multiple scholarly theses treat the glitch as a deliberate, non-resolvable teaching—Dostoevsky's Grand Inquisitor meets Zen master. The archive itself becomes a koan: endless commentary deepening the question rather than answering it.

This reading extends to Surgipelago itself: a wiki devoted to infinite elaboration of an unreachable center—the glitch as epistemology, refusal as method.
