Kochi Biennale

The Kochi-Muziris Biennale is a real contemporary art event; this article describes a fictional Beach Surgery adaptation presented during the 2023 edition.

*Backwater Meridian* was a durational installation that reimagined Leif's wire-crossing as a Kathakali-inflected journey through Kochi's waterscapes.

Participants walked barefoot along narrow raised paths (kalam) between coconut groves and reflecting water. A performer in classical Kathakali lower-body technique (heavy footwork, grounded presence) embodied Leif's blindness and weight, while a second performer in red silk traced Katita's trajectory overhead via rope-suspended movement—impossible grace hovering just above the surface. The installation centered on moments of cascading reflections: participants encountered themselves in water-mirrors, then in a performer's face-paint (classical Kathakali eye-work), then in half-submerged photographs from the drone archive, creating visions that refused to cohere.

The soundscape mixed Hindustani vocal frequencies with tidal recordings; a misfiled audio element marked only as "1994" played at near-subsonic frequencies beneath the primary mix, its origin never established. The collective framed the work not as adaptation but as **recognition** — that Leif and Katita are already water-spirits in their own story, and Kochi is one of their possible becomings.
