Locusts of Rust and Light

The desert. Leif drives across **red sand** with Katita silent beside him, a medical box in the backseat. The horizon crawls with data-harvesters—vast machines resembling **locusts of rust and light**, bodies bristling with cooling fins and solar panels, moving with animal hunger herding something invisible. At a service station, Leif encounters the **mechanic**, who is also the police officer from Newcastle—the same face and voice but displaced in time. The episode visualizes this as **ten overlaid silhouettes**, each frame sliding behind the last. Mechanic: “You've been here before.” Leif: “I know.” The data-harvesters close. In the distance rises **the radio igloo**, a dome of corrugated metal bristling with aerials, humming with the Karman frequency. Katita watches Leif's shoulder blades. The pressure in them builds. A single red diode blinks on his chest.
