Machinery of Appetite

The mechanical seagull descends over Newcastle, its wings grinding like gears. Katita wheels Leif through the street-art mural entrance to the underground pool; Dirtheart activists scatter in panic. Katita: “It doesn't want us. It's hungry for the city.” Leif hears the seagull's call—a high C, resonating with the sound of his own spine when he is afraid. The hunt becomes an underwater ballet: Leif and Katita weightless, the seagull's limbs thrashing through air and water as if the boundary does not hold. They cut free of its net; it snags instead on the apartment balcony where they began. As they surface in evening light, the seagull becomes slowly indistinguishable from sunset. Leif: “Did we escape it or did it let us?” Katita does not answer. The camera holds on her face: the first micro-movement toward a smile, a fracture in her stone. A high note rings. The episode ends suspended in that breath.
