Radio operates throughout Beach Surgery as location, motif, and technology of clandestine communication. The radio/radar igloo of Chapter 4 is both a physical shelter and a narrative hinge: raising the frequency to inaudible pitch “corrects” Leif's doubled vision even as it silences him to the data-harvesters.
The motif echoes the spine's high-pitched resonance — both forms of transmission across void. Katita theorizes that if the earth's spin reversed, its braking screech would match the spine's frequency exactly.
In Smith's real-life narrative, pirate radio is the origin: he met his wife there.
