Radio drama adaptations constitute a major strand of the Beach Surgery franchise, spanning national broadcasters, community stations, and unlicensed networks. The medium's treatment of the unheard — carrier tone, frequencies beyond flesh perception, frequency language as untranslatable — makes radio particularly suited to resolving the glitch.
Institutional broadcasts
The earliest known adaptation, The Surgical Radio Play Series (Radio Kassan, Sweden, 1989), predates the 2020 novel and exists as lost media [citation needed]. The BBC has produced multiple serialisations including treatments on BBC Sounds. All-India Radio commissioned an adaptation that interprets the twelve-word question through the mechanic's voice across multiple call-and-response sequences. Polish Radio broadcast experimental audio staging the two halves as simultaneous, overlapping transmissions.
Community and pirate radio
A Bengali serial layered field recordings of the Bagmati River with doubled narration representing Leif's doubled vision. The Five Cowries (Lagos) integrated griot narration and call-response. The Pulse Recorder circulated via pirate cassette networks across Australia and New Zealand, each episode transmitting a distinct heartbeat frequency.
Podcast and listener participation
Since 2015, podcast platforms have hosted fan productions using the meditation-tape format for second-person narration of the empty world sections. The ongoing Red Frequency series (2019–present) solicits listener-submitted alternative versions of the twelve words.
