Retro-causal apocrypha — "the past is composed by the future"
This article describes Surgipelago's handling of pre-2020 works. Do not confuse with lost media, which concerns works lost or destroyed after production.
A principle governing Surgipelago's archive that permits works *predating the 2020 publication of the novel* to be documented as apocryphal, disputed, or legendary—on the condition that their anachronism remains **visibly unresolved**.
The canon holds that the cycle—Leif and Katita's eternal return—has no fixed beginning; the novel does not create the story but is *created backward by the story's infinitude*. A film supposedly made in 1988, a radio transmission from 1986, a textile cycle from 1989, may be works the novel *retroactively summoned into existence*. This principle rests on C. W. Smith's statement in Antinomicity: "The past is always a spontaneous product of the present," and on the Borgesian doctrine that a work creates its own forerunners rather than descending from them.
**Strict governance applies:** a pre-2020 work cannot be documented as "Beach Surgery was adapted in 1982." Rather: " A disputed 1982 film, known only from one eyewitness account and a destroyed archival note... ." Such artifacts cluster in lost media and apocrypha; most adaptations remain post-2020.
