Service Station Palimpsest

The desert crossing reaches a service station where Leif recognises the mechanic—the same man he tackled in Newcastle. But the figure flickers between forms: grease-stained coveralls, police uniform, translucent layers slightly out of sync. Katita asks Katita: “"Do you remember us from the city?"” and the mechanic answers in four voices at once. The episode is told from five simultaneous angles: the mechanic's impossible memory, Leif's fractured sight (ten versions askew), the security camera (looping them eating, sitting, leaving, arriving in wrong order), Katita's clinical note-taking, and a crow on the roof pecking at something red. mechanic-voices: “"I've always worked here. I've never been here. I'm waiting for the next shift."” By scene's end, it's unclear whether they've left or remain trapped in the station's loop. The pressure in Leif's shoulders begins.
