Ten Layered Versions (Polish film, 1997)

Ten Layered Versions is a Polish experimental film of disputed date — claimed variously as 1997, 1994, or undated — whose relationship to the Beach Surgery novel remains unresolved. It is alternately interpreted as a retro-causal precursor, a coincidental parallel, or a -produced hoax. [1]

Eyewitness account and discovery

A single eyewitness account (recorded in  ████  oral history archive,  ████ ; transcription partially restricted [citation needed]) places the film at the Kraków Experimental Film Festival in  ████ . The witness, a Polish film programmer, described a screened in a single 3-hour sitting. Each part featured — multiple film exposures creating . The protagonist was described as "a bandaged man in light clothing, walking through a city, flanked by a woman dressed in red."

No print was known to exist. A deteriorated 16mm reel — from this film — was recovered from the estate of  ████████   ████  in 2008 and sent for digital restoration to the  ████████  Institute, Poznań. The restoration revealed approximately of : a figure in a wheelchair; a standing figure in what appears to be red armour; optical superimposition creating "ghost images" or "echo-frames"; and a series of , each layer distinct but overlapping. No credits, no title cards, no dialogue. Voiceover fragments in Polish, partially audible: ("I cannot walk… I cannot see…"). [citation needed]

Interpretative positions

The discovery sparked immediate debate, crystallizing into three competing theories:

Precursor thesis: The film is a true precursor to the novel, created in the 1990s by an unknown Polish artist whose work the narrator somehow encountered, or whose work was retro-causally summoned by the novel. Advocates cite the apparent depiction of three injuries and the dominant red motif. [2]

Hoax thesis: The reel is a modern forgery, constructed post-2020 by fans to appear as a precursor. The optical effects, critics argue, are too consistent with digital compositing carefully aged to resemble 16mm deterioration. The voiceover phrases are generic enough to support multiple readings. Coincidence thesis: An unrelated Polish experimental film — possibly untitled, possibly destroyed before attribution — happened to use similar imagery (wheelchair, red clothing, optical layering). The "match" is pareidolia. The voiceover fragments could apply to any story of loss or disability. [citation needed]

Formal properties of the restored fragment

  • , each a slightly different exposure, film-speed, or camera angle, creating a "ghosting" or "echo" effect where all versions coexist
  • (unidentified location; possibly Kraków; possibly studio-constructed)
  • in light-coloured clothing (possibly white shirt, possibly Hawaiian hibiscus print [citation needed]), alternately visible and obscured by the layering
  • in dark/red tones, facing away from camera or into shadow
  • shows a of the superimposed layers, as though all ten versions are rotating inward or converging toward a single point that never arrives
  • — the film stops without resolution; the ten versions do not settle or unify

The — multiple simultaneous versions refusing to collapse into a single "true" image — is structurally homologous to {{Leif's perception of the mechanic in ten layered versions} in Chapter 4}}, and to the glitch itself: a narrative that cannot achieve structural unity.

Attribution and dating

The director's identity is unknown. The film's leader and canister are unmarked.  ██████  has been proposed [citation needed] but remains unconfirmed. Some scholars suggest the film may be genuinely anonymous — a work produced outside the official Polish state-film apparatus, possibly destroyed or lost to institutional neglect before attribution could be established.

The precise date remains disputed. The witness account cites  ████ ; the reel's condition is consistent with 1990s stock but could be earlier or later. Digital analysis of the film stock has been inconclusive [citation needed].
