The Archive Inside the Cloud

At a watering hole surrounded by crocodiles, Leif and Katita discover a decommissioned surveillance drone—cloud-shaped, ancient—floating half-submerged. Its interior holds thousands of instant photographs, a visual archive spanning years. Among them: Katita standing beside an unsmiling man in a Hawaiian hibiscus shirt, desert at his back. Katita: “That is you, Leif.” Leif has no memory of being photographed. The drone's recordings whisper underwater—a sound almost like the sound of the earth rubbing against space, but inverted: the whisper of things *captured*, not things *cycling*. Crocodiles surface. Katita begins burning the photographs one by one, watching each image blacken in the red water.
