The Catch That Answers Every Fall—A Choreographic Work

For the devotional installation version, see The Catch That Answers Every Fall—A Devotional Installation in Broken Hill, NSW. For the philosophical motif, see Fatherhood, birth and the caught descent.

A durational movement work staged in response to the final descent motif in *A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight*, this piece investigates the father's catch as the redemption of falling. The choreography uses a vertical spatial logic: dancers move downward through an otherwise still gymnasium while a single cellist anchors the air with sustained tones. The paradox is absolute—the catch only exists if the fall is real; the fall only exists if the catch does not prevent it.

The dancers' spines arch in anticipation of contact that arrives too late or not at all. Overhead lighting tilts downward in concert with the music, so the dancers' shadows grow as their bodies descend. At climax, all motion ceases except for the cellist's bow, which continues indefinitely.

A 2024 treatment film spliced the choreography with archival field recording (misfiled Convergence_Valley_2047hrs.mp3, source disputed), adding an inadvertent soundscape of river-call and wind. The vigil was revived in Broken Hill in 2025 as part of the broader Caught Descent pilgrimage cycle.

Critics have noted the work's refusal to resolve—the catch never fully arrests the descent; the dancers never fully rest.
