The Catch That Answers Every Fall—A Fragment (Doctoral Thesis, Incomplete)

The Catch That Answers Every Fall is a doctoral thesis submitted incomplete to University of Newcastle in 2021. Only Chapter I survives — 42 pages, titled "The Fall as Grammar." Chapters II–IV were never written.
The completed chapter argues that Leif's crash at sunrise (when wings fail and he falls) is answered by the narrator's act of catching his newborn daughter — "instinctively holds her hands out to catch our daughter in her descent." The fall is not negated but transformed: something below makes the descent survivable.
The text breaks mid-sentence with this final passage:
If we accept that the cycle spins forward, then we must ask: what reverses it? Not refusal. Not resistance. Catching. To catch is to acknowledge the fall as inevitable and still — [manuscript ends]— Ch. I, p. 42
The intended structure:
- Chapter II: The Catch as Counter-Cycle (outline only: "break the cycle not by preventing the fall but by ensuring something waits below")
- Chapter III: Pregnancy and the Caught Descent
- Chapter IV: Fatherhood as Refusal
The supervisor's final report concludes: "The work abandons itself at the moment of deepest insight. Perhaps this abandonment is intentional. The thesis enacts its own incompleteness." The author did not resubmit.
