The Dar es Salaam Frequencies (Lost 1991 Radio Cycle)

A three-episode radio cycle allegedly broadcast on Radio Tanzania in 1991, adapted in Swahili and structured as a "coastal triage report" interspersed with taarab song. No archival recordings exist in official collections. The sole evidence comprises a fragmentary typed manuscript (██ ), dated "circa 1992," housed at the **Institute of Swahili Studies, University of Dar es Salaam**, and cryptic references in the late collector Mkuba's private correspondence.
The broadcast purportedly starred voice actor **Salum Mwanyika**, known for serialising oral epics. Episode titles appear only as phonetic hints in Mkuba's notes: *"Usiku wa Kwanza"* (First Night), *"Mwaliko wa Bahari"* (Harbour Feast), *"Kura ya Pande Mbili"* (Vote of Two Sides). A 1991 **University of Dar es Salaam** student newspaper clipping mentions "a radical new radio reading of the Surgery novel," attributed to "an anonymous collective."
The **Dar es Salaam Frequencies Discord** (est. 2021, ~300 members) remains sharply divided: some argue the cycle survives on unmarked cassettes in private hands; others suspect Mkuba's involvement was a hoax. A 2019 TBC FOIA request returned no matching records. Whether lost or never made, the work has spawned transcription attempts and speculative reconstructions among Tanzanian and diaspora fans. [1]
