The Doubled Cosmology—Lawrence's Flesh and DeLillo's Media Dread in Smith's Recursive Method
This article proposes that Smith's oeuvre is structured by a fundamental tension between two modernist inheritances: Lawrence's vitalism (the body as truth) and DeLillo's systems critique (media as obscuration). Beach Surgery stages this tension unresolved.
A critical fault-line runs through C. W. Smith's work and, by inheritance, through Beach Surgery: the irreconcilability of Lawrentian vitalism and DeLillian systems-critique.
The Two Modernisms
D.H. Lawrence insists that authentic knowledge flows through the body—sexual surrender, blood-consciousness, the wound as redemption. Don DeLillo (White Noise, Underworld, Cosmopolis) depicts a world so saturated with mediation (television, commerce, spectacle, data) that immediate bodily experience becomes impossible. The flesh is always already colonized by systems.
The Oscillation
In the novel, these cosmologies war without resolution:
- The underground stone swimming pool is Lawrentian: the lovers move through darkness by *feeling*, by bodily knowledge. Flesh is immediate; the body knows.
- The data-harvesters pursuing them are DeLillian: machines harvesting the world into data, abstraction, control. The body is always observed, always already archived.
- The radio igloo (§2, Ch.4) is the pivot: raising a frequency "corrects" Leif's doubled vision—systems (the radio) restore bodily perception. The two cosmologies momentarily align, then diverge again.
Smith's Inheritance
Rather than reconcile these vectors, Smith inherits both. In Antinomicity, the narrator rides trains and remembers flesh; he builds data-archives and celebrates intimate touch. The surplus is not that these truths coexist but that they cannot. The glitch may itself be this doubled cosmology refusing to cohere. Adaptations that lean Lawrentian (the erotic opera; the swimming cycles) and those that lean DeLillian (the video-game surveillance; the drone archive) are all equally faithful to Smith's recursive method.
