The Frequencies Where Flesh Refuses
Leif and Katita approach the radio/radar igloo as the afternoon heat distorts the horizon. The external pacemaker ticks audibly; pressure in Leif's shoulders has become constant, aching. Katita raises the frequency to correct his doubled vision, then pushes higher—into registers normally inaudible. The sound becomes visible as a shimmer in the air. Leif's spine resonates at a pitch Katita recognizes: high D, the harmonic that mirrors the Karman line's drone. White feathers begin materializing along his shoulder-blades, not growing but *revealing what was already folded there*. Katita: “If we stop raising the frequency, does this reverse?” Leif does not answer. Both stand suspended in the shimmer, neither moving to lower the dial nor step away from it. The dial continues climbing.
