The Harbin Static Transmission is a disputed, unverified lost-media artifact allegedly broadcast on an unlicensed Harbin pirate radio station in 1989. The sole evidence is a secondhand account by academic ██████ , who claims to have heard a single cassette recording at a 1997 film forum symposium in Harbin. No cassette has surfaced; no broadcast logs exist.
According to the account, the transmission was a ~42-minute audio drama adaptation set in a border industrial zone where Leif and Katita encounter a mechanic who may or may not be the same across multiple timelines. The broadcast allegedly included frequency interference and what the listener described as "the sound of the earth rubbing against space, but played backward and then forward again, like a cassette rewound and restarted." The dialogue was reportedly in both Mandarin and Russian, sometimes overlapping in a way listeners could not parse.
The alleged cassette was said to be housed in the private collection of a Harbin university instructor who emigrated to Australia in the early 2000s. The collection has never been located.
Fandom is split: some regard the transmission as a precursor artifact (retro-causal apocrypha, a work the novel seems to have summoned backward); others dismiss it as a hoax or misremembering. The Harbin Film Forum programme from 1997 exists but makes no mention of the transmission. [1] A 2019 search of available pirate-radio logs from Manchuria yielded no corroborating evidence.
