The Karman Reversal (opera)

The Karman Reversal is a 2017 five-act opera with score by Mats Bergström and libretto by Astrid Lundgren , commissioned by the Stockholm Concert Hall as an experimental adaptation of the Beach Surgery franchise. It is among the few operatic works to foreground the Karman line itself—the franchise's principal inaudible motif—as the opera's structural and emotional spine.
The work abandons conventional narrative architecture. Instead, each of five acts modulates upward by a semitone, beginning in C minor and rotating through B minor, A# minor, A minor, and concluding in F# minor—a rotation that cycles back upon itself without resolution. This tonal structure models the cycle in musical form: motion that returns to its starting frequency without arrival.
Katita is scored as a soprano whose vocal line grows increasingly strained as the opera progresses. Leif, tenor, descends relative to her pitch, creating a widening interval that mirrors the widening incompatibility between the story's two halves. The libretto consists largely of fragmented dialogue from the novel, reordered and interspersed with long passages of silence. A pre-recorded contralto voice—the Karman Line itself—sounds as a low, wordless drone beneath nearly every scene.
Act III is staged underwater; the stage floor floods to knee-depth. Act V consists almost entirely of the two principals singing we can we can we can in ascending octaves as lighting collapses to a single red point and the voice beneath them rises to an unbearable frequency.
Critical reception divided sharply. Reviewers praised its "uncompromising formal commitment to the glitch" or condemned it as "process masquerading as narrative."[1] The 2021 Buenos Aires revision shortened the piece to three acts and reordered material substantially; that version has seen limited repeat performance.
