The Laugh That Cracks the World
On the rocket cart descending toward Newcastle's mouth at dawn, Leif asks his twelve-word question—the one query Katita has been dreading across a thousand loops. She does not answer. Instead, she laughs: a clear, bright, impossible sound that seems to split the red sky. But the laughter fractures mid-breath into a scream of absolute refusal. Katita: “No no no no no.” The cart hits rough ground. Behind them, military police, Dirtheart activists, wild dogs, and a farmer's wood-chipper mech converge in chaos. Katita's armour glints red. Leif feels the pressure beneath his shoulder-blades reach a crescendo. Leif: “Katita—” The world does not answer.
