The Leather Archives—A Community-Built Spiral Shrine in Reclaimed Warehouse Space (Accra, 2022–ongoing)

"The Leather Archives" is a community-initiated, continuously evolving spiral shrine and archive space in Accra, Ghana, begun in 2022 and ongoing. Sited in a reclaimed textile warehouse in the Osu district, the work physically manifests the leather's recursive presence across the cycle — specifically, Katita's seven-looped armour and the enigma of its surplus ("there is secretly enough leather for a dozen suits — the cycle has run many times").
The structure takes the form of a **seven-turn spiral**, spiralling outward from a central open floor. Each turn is a floor-to-ceiling shelving unit constructed from reclaimed wood and steel. The shelves hold an accumulating archive of leather objects: donated clothing (jackets, shoes, belts, holsters), salvaged leather from defunct furniture workshops, industrial scraps from West African tanneries, and hand-stitched pieces created by visitors during "stitch sessions" held three times weekly.
Each spiral turn corresponds to one "loop" of the cycle (or one potential loop; the numbering is deliberately ambiguous). The innermost is titled "The First Stitch"; the outermost, "The Unfinished Seventh." Visitors may browse, contribute objects (with optional written context), stitch during open sessions, or listen to recorded oral histories from elderly Ghanaian leather-workers and seamstresses played quietly throughout the space.
A handwritten visitor ledger (updated daily by rotating volunteer "keepers") documents every object and stitch-session attendance — itself an illegible palimpsest. [1]
The work is explicitly framed as an ongoing **refusal to complete**. The initiator's 2022 statement reads: “We will never finish the seventh turn. Seven is the number of loops, and the loops do not end. The leather gathers forever.” No closing date has been announced.
The work sits in geographical and conceptual proximity to Leif's Doubled-Eye Kente Weaving—An Accra Textile Collaborative (2022–present), also Accra-based, initiated the same year. Some visitors participate in both; no official coordination is documented.
