The Leather Enough Hypothesis—Counting the Loops
This article documents an ongoing collaborative fan hypothesis. See The Leather Cartography for the working spreadsheet.
**The Leather Enough Hypothesis** is a collaborative 2022–present community research project tracking every reference to the leather—specifically Katita's armour-making materials in the cabin during Chapter 5—across all accessible Beach Surgery adaptations. The hypothesis: the quantity is a hidden numerical clue to the number of prior loop iterations. The theory originates from a single line in the novel: "there is secretly enough leather for a dozen suits."
Contributors (`not_the_ocean`, `leather_enough_v2`, `rose_house`, and approximately ██ others) catalogued every mention and meta-reference across 26 manga volumes, 40+ anime episodes, 17 films, and 8 audio dramas, building a spreadsheet (v7.3, updated monthly) that plots mentions against adaptation release date. Their finding: adaptations released closest to 2020 mention minimal leather; later adaptations accumulate references to "extra leather," "surplus leather," "leather enough for one more loop." The inference: this reflects a collective memory—each new adaptation unconsciously encoding awareness of all prior ones, as though the franchise itself remembers the 12 loops.
The leather is not a detail. It is a ledger. Every adaptation that adds more is remembering all the loops at once.— Attributed to `dust_garden`, forum archive, 2023.
Critique: skeptics argue variation reflects independent creative choice, not shared hidden knowledge.[1]
