The Mechanic's Second Face

The service station: Leif recognizes the mechanic as the police officer he tackled in Newcastle, but sees "ten layered versions" at once—memory fracture from worsening doubled vision. Each version speaks a different memory: the one who pulled him from the refugee raft, the one who took Katita's money, the one *who is* Katita. The mechanic, unfazed, hands Leif a corroded manifold. The Mechanic: “"You've rebuilt this seventeen times. Same manifold, different hands."” Leif asks if they've had this conversation before. The mechanic points to a photograph above the register: Leif and Katita at the car park, bandaged and complete. The manifold is warm. The episode ends with Leif understanding, impossibly, that he *has* lived this moment many times—the cycle recognition breaking through the narrative present.
