The Mechanic's Ten Faces

At a desert service station, Leif's eyes—still bandaged—are corrected by a radio igloo's frequency, revealing a ten-layer vision: the mechanic attending their diesel truck is simultaneously the police officer he tackled on the Newcastle rooftop, a soldier, the boy he once saved from the waves. Each face flickers over the mechanic's features like a palimpsest. Katita watches Leif's blindness translate into sight-too-much. The mechanic says, The Mechanic: “"You kept all of us. We're all still inside you."” Leif's hand cannon trembles. When the frequency shifts, the mechanic collapses into a single exhausted man, reaching for Leif's shoulder—but Katita positions herself between them. The pressure in Leif's shoulder-blades becomes unbearable, a weight pushing to exit.
