The Mechanic's Third Confession
At a service station in the red desert, Leif recognizes the mechanic as the police officer he tackled in Half Two, Chapter 4 — but this time the mechanic confesses: there is no officer, only Leif's doubled vision replaying itself. Mechanic: “"You come here every seven loops, and every time I have to tell you something different because you forget. This time: there is no police. Only the pressure in your back."” The episode stages the miracle temptation: Leif's legs strengthen; he could run. The mechanic offers him a gun. Katita watches from the diner window, leather armour draped across her shoulders, and offers no warning. Katita: “"He always takes the gun on the eighth loop."” The screen fractals; we see six versions of Leif reaching for the weapon simultaneously, each in a different desert light. The temperature rises. One version pulls the trigger.
