A theory proposing that **the mechanic** at the service station in Chapter 4 is not a distinct character but a **temporally-displaced iteration of Leif**, caught in a previous loop of the cycle. Originating in a 2017 Reddit post by **dust_garden**, developed extensively by the Newcastle Recursion Collective.

**Core evidence:**

• The mechanic is simultaneously "the police officer Leif tackled earlier"—one body with two contradictory identities, unexplained in the text.
• Leif perceives "ten layered versions" of the mechanic's face, suggesting a palimpsest across time-loops rather than optical distortion alone.
• The mechanic speaks with cryptic omniscience ("You already know what happens next"), implying prior experience of this moment.
• Entry into the radio/radar igloo immediately after "corrects" Leif's doubled vision by raising frequency to inaudible pitch, erasing temporal interference.

**Counter-arguments (Literalist Camp):** Text explicitly distinguishes mechanic and officer by role; "ten layered versions" reflects only Leif's bandaged-eye disturbance, not recursion. No causal mechanism for temporal displacement is established.

**Defenders' reply:** The novel deliberately erases distinction to force readers into the gap. Mechanically, the cycle itself supplies causality—recurrence without causal explanation is the glitch's signature.
