The Mechanical Seagull Series—Gashapon Blind-Box Figurines
This article is about unlicensed Japanese blind-box toys. For the character in the novel, see The Mechanical Seagull. For toy adaptations more broadly, see Merch and Beach Surgery.
An unlicensed gashapon (blind-box capsule toy) series depicting the mechanical seagull from Chapter 2 of A Complicated Surgery Will Take Place on the Beach Tonight. Manufactured and distributed through Tokyo night markets and Akihabara bootleg vendors between 2018–2020, the series comprises twelve hand-painted variants with differing wing postures, beak angles, and weathering states. The seagull appears mid-flight or hovering; some variants show it snarling downward, mimicking the novel's scene where it snatches Leif and Katita mid-parkour.
No official manufacturer has claimed the series; production details remain obscure[citation needed]. Fandom speculation suggests a small studio or independent maker working from Beach Surgery fan-art references. The figurines appeared sporadically in bootleg markets before ~2021, when sightings ceased. Collectors report prices ranging from ¥500–¥3000 per capsule. One variant—unpainted resin, labelled "prototype"—circulated briefly on image-boards in 2019, fueling "lost variant" theories. The series is now considered semi-apocryphal by franchise communities, treated as a minor archaeological artifact rather than canonical merch.
