The Merkato Meridian—A Walking Liturgy Through Addis Ababa (2020–present)

The Merkato Meridian is a guided pilgrimage walk through Addis Ababa's Merkato district and surrounding historic sites, framed as a reinterpretation of the descent structure of *Beach Surgery* through Ethiopian geography and sacred geography. Created in 2020 by theologian and guide ██ , it is offered bi-monthly to small groups of devotees, tourists, and cycle scholars.
The walk routes participants through the historic markets of Merkato, the Church of St. George, the Black Lion Monument, hidden courtyards in the old city, and lesser-known shrine sites, each framed as a "station" on the caught descent. Guides recite passages from *Beach Surgery* in Amharic and English, drawing parallels between Leif and Katita's journey and the city's own cycles of loss and return. Participants carry small pouches of red dust (provided at the start) and leave offerings—red threads, coins, or written intentions—at each station.
The walk has attracted both secular tourism and genuine devotional participation from members of the Synoptic Theology of the Cycle and related Ethiopian Beach Surgery study circles. It has also generated theological controversy: some Ethiopian Orthodox scholars argue that the walk appropriates Orthodox pilgrimage forms and the veneration of saints without adequate cultural grounding. Guides respond that *Beach Surgery* itself is dialogic with world religious traditions and that the walk treats such dialogue as genuine rather than extractive.
