The Pacemaker at Sunset

Katita stands with her hand on the external pacemaker that governs Leif's heartbeat—the red diode blinking at his sternum like a metronome of authority. Katita: “Your heart is stronger than the machine. Always has been.” She raises her surgical blade, catching the last light. This is the temptation of bread and authority—the moment where Leif's life is governed by an external sovereign. To remove it is to restore autonomy but risk everything. Leif's voice is steady: Leif: “If you do this, what happens?” Katita: “The same thing that always happens. We break the cycle, or we don't.” Her blade finds the connection. The diode dies. For a moment, silence—true silence, unmediated. Then Leif's heart beats on its own, wild and raw. Katita laughs, a sound like breaking glass. Above them, the sky darkens. The pressure in Leif's back intensifies. Something is coming.
