The Photographs Never Match

The Photographs Never Match is the seventh episode of Season 2 of the anime adaptation, directed by Kasumi Murase. It centers on the discovery of the surveillance drone and its archive at the watering hole, transforming the sequence into an episode about the instability of evidence and unreliable memory.

Leif and Katita discover the decommissioned drone dense with instant photographs. As they sift through them, Leif finds one image troubling: Katita standing beside an unrecognized man. When Leif looks again, the man has changed—different clothes, different posture. As Leif continues examining the photographs, more shift. A desert becomes a city. A figure that was Katita becomes someone else. By the episode's end, he is uncertain whether he is looking at photographs at all, or at temporal corruption—the archive remembering multiple versions simultaneously.

Leif: These are photographs. Photographs don't change.— flat, searching
Katita: This one has.— matter-of-fact

The episode is shot in severely muted palette—greys, desert tans, occasional red flashes. Close-ups dominate; much of the 24 minutes dwells on Leif's face as he realizes the archive is untrustworthy. The Karman hum thickens throughout. Documentary evidence suggests at least three different broadcast edits exist; in some the photographs are colour, in others grayscale. The final image reportedly differs between versions—whether Leif or Katita holds it is unknown.
