The Question That Falls

The cabin at the mouth of the interior. Wild dogs, military police, Dirtheart activists in their animal masks, a farmer's wood-chipper mech—total chaos rendered in fast-cut montage, each frame a layer of the same violence happening at different speeds. Katita and Leif reach the rocket cart hidden beneath corrugated iron. As they descend toward the city's lights, Leif speaks. He asks the question: twelve words, precisely counted, that Katita has been dreading since she found him in the triage tent. The anime cuts to black before his words reach audio. The cart accelerates. At the crest of a dune, white structures burst from Leif's shoulders—not wings but bone, bright as sun-bleached driftwood, unfurling through his skin. Katita: “"No—no, not again, not again—"” He rises. He flies. The cart continues alone. Then impact: the sound is both the sound of the earth rubbing against space and something breaking inside a person. The cycle remains unbroken. Katita crawls from the wreckage in her leather armour, alive. She reaches for the medical box and begins again.
