The Rocket Cart's Velocity

Leif builds the cart faster this time—not from strength, but from memory. His hands know each joint, each angle, as though his body has built this a dozen times before. Katita: “"Test it alone."” He drives down the dirt road at dusk, armor gleaming red in the light. Leif: “"If I do this, there's no coming back."” Katita: “"There's always coming back. That's the problem."” The engine roars. Pressure builds in his shoulder blades—not pain, but something *unfurling*. The city ahead (Newcastle? Shanbudia? A city unnamed) glows on the horizon. The cart accelerates past the point of control. The camera pulls back. He is small against the desert. The engine screams. Beneath the Hawaiian shirt, beneath the armor, something white pushes against the skin. The wings—still folded, still hidden—begin to twitch with a life of their own. The road curves. The cart does not slow. The episode ends on his face, eyes forward, as the wheels leave the ground.
