The Seagull's Shadow

A Dirtheart cell in animal masks pursues Katita and Leif across a Newcastle rooftop. A mechanical seagull descends—not pursuer but transport. Katita observes, "That is not the bird we want." Leif's hand cannon misfires. The seagull's hatch opens: children inside, relocated rather than rescued. Katita wheels Leif to a fire escape; they descend into an alleyway where the seagull cannot follow. She touches the back of his bandages. "Your ears are bleeding. Only a little." The seagull rises, its call a serrated howl—not quite the earth's resonance, but close. The activists regroup below, face-swapping among themselves. One removes a mask: the mechanic from the service station, or someone who wears his face. Identity slips. The seagull circles once and vanishes into industrial haze.
