The Surgery Waits is a 2022 immersive escape-room installation by Brisbane-based theatre collective The Threshold Collective. Set within a disused veterinary clinic, it dramatizes the final hours of Half Two of Beach Surgery—specifically the cabin sequence where Katita and Leif prepare for descent.

Structure and experience

Participants enter as unnamed medical personnel tasked with preparing two patients for evacuation. Five interconnected rooms present puzzles tied to the story's core themes. In one, participants must choose between destroying or preserving photographs, echoing the drone sequence. In another, they assemble Katita's leather armour from scattered materials, discovering excess leather exists for "multiple uses"—a structural hint at the cycle.

The installation's central conceit: participants cannot leave without correctly diagnosing Leif's condition. But the symptoms contradict and shift between groups. Time pressure and isolation weaponize disorientation; the space itself becomes the glitch.

The installation treats the coin with one side as architectural principle—participants encounter identical doorways that lead to different chambers, spaces that appear to loop but don't quite align on re-entry.

Reception

Reactions split along familiarity with canon. Escape-room communities unfamiliar with Beach Surgery found it inaccessible; fan responses proved enthusiastic. The work was documented in a short film by  ██  in 2023. [citation needed] The Threshold Collective has announced plans for a permanent installation but no date has been confirmed.
